Dr. Juju: Inspiring Growth, Curiosity, and Creativity Through Music and Arts

Across middle school, high school, and creative learning experiences, my teaching artist philosophy is guided by seven core traits that foster growth, resilience, and artistic development: grit, self-control, zest, social intelligence, gratitude, optimism, and curiosity. These traits help students and creative learners build confidence, explore new ideas, and develop the skills needed to express themselves fully and make intentional, meaningful choices.” Dr. Juju [a.k.a. Julian D. Owens, PhD, MPH]

1. Grit: Perseverance Through Challenges

Core Philosophy:
Grit is the determination to keep going even when projects, performances, or creative challenges get tough. It helps students grow through practice, reflection, and persistence.

Audience Applications:

  • Middle school students (grades 7–8): Keep trying on music or arts projects, even when something feels difficult — each effort builds skill and confidence.

  • High school students (grades 9–12): Push through challenges in performance, composition, or leadership roles, learning from setbacks and refining your approach.

  • School Personnel/Program Staff: Persist in exploring new ideas or techniques, understanding that progress comes through consistent effort and reflection.

2. Self-Control: Mastery Over Impulse

Core Philosophy:
Self-control allows students to focus, manage emotions, and follow through on commitments, whether in practice, rehearsal, or creative projects.

Audience Applications:

  • Middle school students: Practice patience, focus during lessons, and follow through on creative assignments.

  • High school students: Balance rehearsal, schoolwork, and creative exploration while managing time and energy.

  • School Personnel/Program Staff: Stay disciplined in practice or collaborative projects to achieve meaningful artistic outcomes.

3. Zest: Energy and Engagement

Core Philosophy:
Zest is bringing enthusiasm and curiosity to learning, music, and creative exploration. It transforms challenges into opportunities for discovery and personal growth.

Audience Applications:

  • Middle school students: Approach each lesson, rehearsal, or activity with curiosity and excitement.

  • High school students: Engage fully in performances, projects, and leadership opportunities, letting your energy inspire others.

  • School Personnel/Program Staff: Infuse ideas, experimentation, and collaboration with passion and attention.

4. Social Intelligence: Connect and Collaborate

Core Philosophy:
Social intelligence is the ability to work well with others, understand perspectives, and communicate effectively — essential in group music, collaborative arts, and any creative endeavor.

Audience Applications:

  • Middle school students: Listen to peers, share ideas respectfully, and contribute positively in group projects.

  • High school students: Lead, collaborate, and resolve conflicts in ensembles, teams, or creative groups.

  • School Personnel/Program Staff: Build relationships with mentors and collaborators, fostering effective teamwork and artistic synergy.

5. Gratitude: Appreciation and Perspective

Core Philosophy:
Gratitude helps students recognize their progress, the support they receive, and the opportunities available, fostering perspective and resilience.

Audience Applications:

  • Middle school students: Celebrate small successes and recognize the help and guidance of teachers and peers.

  • High school students: Acknowledge mentors, collaborators, and experiences that enhance growth and learning.

  • School Personnel/Program Staff: Reflect on opportunities, achievements, and supportive communities that help you grow as an artist.

6. Optimism: Forward-Focused Mindset

Core Philosophy:
Optimism encourages students to approach challenges with confidence and hope, turning obstacles into opportunities for learning and creative problem-solving.

Audience Applications:

  • Middle school students: Believe in your ability to improve skills and create meaningful work, even when learning something new feels tough.

  • High school students: Maintain a positive outlook in projects, performances, and leadership, focusing on solutions and possibilities.

  • School Personnel/Program Staff: Approach exploration and experimentation with hope, curiosity, and resilience.

7. Curiosity: Explore and Innovate

Core Philosophy:
Curiosity drives exploration, experimentation, and learning. It fuels creative growth and the pursuit of new ideas.

Audience Applications:

  • Middle school students: Ask questions, try new techniques, and explore different ways to express yourself creatively.

  • High school students: Pursue intellectual and artistic curiosity, expanding your skills, perspectives, and leadership potential.

  • School Personnel/Program Staff: Experiment boldly, challenge assumptions, and discover innovative approaches to art and music.

“My teaching artist philosophy integrates these seven traits to help students, school personnel, clinicians and practitioners, parents and guardians, program staff, and concerned others teach skills, demonstrating empathy and compassion, confidence, and resilience. By combining guidance, reflection, and hands-on practice, I empower learners to explore, express, and make intentional choices that reflect their values, willingness to think creatively and strategically, and commitment to personal growth. This approach prepares them to navigate challenges, collaborate effectively, and thrive in both artistic and life pursuits.”
